Saratoga Springs, NY

Back in late August, I had the [amazing] opportunity to travel to Saratoga Springs, NY and watch the beloved American Pharoah run in the Travers Race!

For those (like me) who are unfamiliar with horse racing, the Travers Day is a HUGE race in Saratoga Springs. It’s traditionally on the last Saturday in August, dating back to 1864. It’s dubbed the “Mid-Summer Derby” is the most anticipated event of the summer racing meet, and the entire city celebrates with a weeklong prelude festival of music, racing events, parties, restaurant week and other special events!

Saratoga itself is an adorable town! It reminds me of Athens, GA- a small, quaint downtown filled with rich history, cute shops, amazing restaurants & an “old town” feel due to to all of the horse racing….

We ate at a few restaurants & were spoiled: pasta, steak, lobster, oh my!

Of course, my favorite part was dressing up, putting on a big hat, and betting on some horses! It’s really fun and non-intimidating because you can place $0.50 or $1.00 bets (I did!). The track feels very vintage and authentic. You set up camp in the paddock, where you wheel in coolers full of food & drink. Everyone enjoys eating, drinking & dancing between races. The whole experience is truly special & one not to be missed…

I can’t wait to go back and explore Saratoga more! If you’ve been considering going, I highly recommend it! There is so much to offer in this small, New York town. Who’s been? Any suggestions or “must do” activities for me?!

  1. Did you check out the shopping scene? Also I regret not going but the National Dance Museum, and the grounds of grounds of the Gideon Putnam are gorgeous! I actually really miss it up there!
